Classic Diamond Floater® |
To understand the
future, let's look for a moment at the past. Our ad in the current
issue of Martha Stewart Living / Weddings features the
ring that started it all....the Classic Floater®.
I'd like to share with you the intriguing story of how this ring
came to be. |

A woman came to
me with a loose diamond that had belonged to her fiancee's grandmother,
wishing to have me mount it as her engagement stone. The stone
was beautiful, with fine proportions and finish, and high color
and clarity. She so much admired this diamond that she asked
me not to "put it in a cage". She was, of course, referring
to the prong head that most jewelers assemble to a ring shank
to create the traditional solitaire. |

Think of what we
put in cages, and why; animals in the zoo, birds in a cage, a
prisoner in a cell. Cages are about containing something rare,
beautiful or dangerous. While your diamond isn't dangerous, it
is definitely rare and beautiful! |

By the way, she
also mentioned that she was active in sports, especially skiing,
and wanted to wear her engagement ring all the time. |

The Classic Floater®
is the ring I designed for her. I'm pleased to say that to my
knowledge she still is enjoying this ring today...over fifteen
years later. She has been able to view and appreciate not just
the top of her treasured gemstone, but all of it - from the table
to the culet. |

Little did I realize
that from this design concept - the Floating Diamond - would
come my whole collection of jewelry inspired by the idea of enhancing
to the fullest the brilliance and beauty unique to each gemstone. |
